An associate degree is an undergraduate academic degree awarded by community colleges, junior colleges, technical colleges, bachelor's degree-granting colleges, and universities upon completion of a course of study usually lasting two years. In the United States, and some areas of Canada, an associate degree is often equivalent to the first two years of a four-year college or university degree. In spite of high unemployment, there is high demand for people with skills that often require no more than an associate degree, such as lab technicians, midwifery, nurses, nutritionists, teachers in early-childhood programs, computer technicians, draftsmen, radiation therapists, paralegals, and machinists.
